Rail Fastening System Shoulder

Rail Fastening System Shoulder

Rail shoulders are cast in the concrete railway sleepers to fix elastic rail clips and steel rail. According to different production processes, rail shoulders can be divided into cast-in rail shoulder and weld-on shoulder, and both of the two types of rail shoulders have the function of fixing elastic rail clips and protecting the rail clips from being stolen.

Rail Shoulder Fastening System

Shoulder Of Railway Steel Rail

A Railway Shoulder is a structural component of a concrete sleeper (or part of a steel/plastic baseplate assembly) that provides lateral support and a positive bearing surface for the rail fastening system. It is the engineered interface that transfers lateral forces from the rail, through the fastener (e.g., clip), and into the sleeper body, while also maintaining precise gauge and resisting rail roll-over.

Functional & Engineering Perspective

Load-Bearing Profile: Features a precisely angled or contoured bearing face designed to match the fastening clip's geometry, ensuring optimal force transmission from clip to sleeper.

Integral vs. Insulated Design: In concrete sleepers, it can be monolithically cast or a separate composite insert. Critical designs incorporate electrical insulation (nylon/polyamide) to isolate the rail in electrified track circuits.

Gauge Corner Reinforcement: Often contains additional steel reinforcement or fiber reinforcement in concrete to withstand high cyclic lateral loads and prevent chipping or spalling at the critical gauge corner.

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Lateral Restraint Transmission: Serves as the primary structural element that receives lateral forces from the rail clip and transfers them as compressive stresses into the massive concrete sleeper body.
  • Clip Retention & Alignment: Physically locates and retains the fastening clip (e.g., Nabla, SKL) in its correct position, preventing clip displacement during installation or under vibration.
  • Rail Cant Provision: The bearing surface is often cast at a specific slope (typically 1:40 or 1:20) to establish the correct rail inclination (cant) for optimal wheel-rail contact and wear distribution.
