The dog spike was first invented in 1832 and is named after the two dog-head-shaped lugs on each side. It is similar in size to the screw spike, with a radius on the flange to fix the track directly to the sleeper.
The screw spike first appeared in 1860 and has a stronger fixing force. Generally speaking, the screw spike is mainly used for heavy rail applications, while the dog spike is used for light rail.
The rail dog spike is put into use in many applications from coal and gold mines to leisure parks, as well as in some heavy rail applications.
