Screw Spike System

Screw Spike System

The screw spike is also known as rail screw. As one kind of Rail spike, it is a metal screw for fixing rail fasteners. Screw spike is usually made of NO.3 steel. Because its nail rod surface has thread, so it is called screw spike. The pull-out resistance is 0.5 ~ 1.0 times larger than that of common rail spike, but the thrust resistance is 50% less. Due to disassembly and assembly inconvenience, it is difficult to adjust the rail gauge, which is generally used on the railway turnout. For meeting various needs of clients, we can offer coach screws, stud screw, railway sleeper screws and other coustom screw spike in railway.

Rail Screw spike Fastening System

Good Hardness Screw Spikes

The Railway Screw Spike is a threaded steel fastening device that converts rotational torque into axial clamping force through engineered helical threads, representing the evolutionary bridge between primitive nail-type spikes and modern elastic fastening systems . Unlike the dog spike's wood-displacement action, the screw spike cuts mating threads into a pre-drilled pilot hole-or engages with a pre-installed threaded insert in concrete sleepers-creating a precise, repeatable clamping force measurable in Newton-meters of installation torque .

Technical Specifications:

Feature Category Specification / Detail Functional Benefit
Material Grade Medium Carbon Steel (0.17-0.25% C, 0.90-1.35% Mn) 70,000 psi min tensile with 25% elongation
Thread Profile 60° V-thread or Buttress (4-6 TPI typical) Converts torque to clamping force with 5:1 mechanical advantage
Installation Torque 100-200 Nm (typical, varies by application) Provides verifiable, repeatable clamping force
Head Type Square, Hexagon, or Round with drive socket Compatible with manual wrenches or automated installation machinery
Holding Power 2x greater than dog spike (typical) Superior resistance to rail creep and lateral movement
Surface Treatment Plain oiled, black oxide, hot-dip galvanized, Dacromet Corrosion protection matching environmental exposure

Installation & Maintenance Perspective:

Helical Load Conversion: The thread profile (typically 60° V-thread or buttress design) translates rotational torque into axial clamping force with mechanical advantage exceeding 5:1 compared to nail-type spikes .

Controlled Interference Fit: Threads are engineered with specific major/minor diameter ratios that create radial preload in timber without splitting, while concrete inserts provide precision thread engagement .

Torque-Tension Relationship: Installation torque (typically 100-200 Nm) correlates directly with achieved clamping force, enabling quality assurance through torque monitoring .

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Spring Washer Compatibility: Designed specifically to accommodate conical spring washers that maintain clamping force despite timber compression, temperature cycling, and dynamic loads .
  • Tie Plate Fixation: The head geometry secures tie plates to sleepers with precise bearing pressure, maintaining the critical plate-to-tie friction that reduces spike stresses by up to 80% .
  • Universal Sleeper Application: Available in configurations for timber sleepers (direct thread cutting), concrete sleepers (with plastic or cast-in threaded inserts), and steel sleepers (welded nuts) .
