Railroad spike, or called track spike, is a large nail with an offset head that is used to secure steel rails and base plates to railway sleepers in the track.
Square head screw spike are usually made of medium carbon or alloy steel and the surface is heat treated to increase hardness and wear resistance. International standards set strict requirements for tensile strength, yield strength and impact toughness to ensure they are less prone to breakage or deformation under long-term loads and various climatic conditions. Some models also have hot-dip galvanized or Dacromet coatings to increase corrosion resistance and extend service life.
