How are rail clips fixed to the rails?

Rail clips are fixed to rails through two primary methods: bolting or welding. For bolted systems, clips are secured to the track structure with bolts, nuts, and washers that are tightened to hold the rail in place. Welded clips have their base plate fused to the supporting structure using a fillet weld.

Bolted clips

  • Placement: The clip body is positioned over the rail, and its bottom flange rests on the rail's bottom surface.

  • Assembly: Bolts are passed through the clip's holes and the underlying support structure (like ties or base plates).

  • Securing: Nuts are run down the bolts, often with washers to distribute pressure, and then tightened securely to compress the clip against the rail and the support.

  • Adjustment: Some systems use a cam for lateral adjustment, while others use slots in the clip to allow for minor movement before final tightening.

  • Tightening: Nuts are tightened to the required torque specified by the manufacturer to ensure the clip has a firm, stable hold.

Welded clips

  • Placement: The clip is positioned on the base of the rail.

  • Weld preparation: The clip's base is prepared for welding.

  • Welding: A fillet weld is applied around the clip's base, securing it to the supporting structure.

  • Tightening: For certain designs with a self-tightening mechanism, nuts are tightened to a specified torque after welding to apply a controlled force to the rail.
