How to repair Rail Elastic Clips?
Elastic rail clip is one of the common railway fasteners in the railway system. In general, elastic rail clip is made of forged spring steel and has many applications. No matter as a part of rail fastening system or as a rail fastener, elastic rail clip is used with other railway track parts, such as railroad spike, rail pad, tie plate and plastic dowel.

Repairing rail elastic clips typically involves replacing damaged or worn-out clips by removing the old ones and installing new ones, a process that requires specific tools and procedures for ensuring proper installation and track stability. If the clip itself is not broken but the fastening is loose, maintenance procedures include cleaning and oiling, ensuring proper component alignment, and retightening components to the correct specifications. For minor issues, a hand tool can be used, but major repairs may require machinery.
Repairing loose components
- Inspect all parts: Check for damaged or missing components like the rail pad, tie plate, and gauge block before you start.
- Clean and oil: Remove any dirt, debris, or corrosion and apply oil to the rail clips to prevent future corrosion.
- Check alignment: Ensure that the gauge block is correctly positioned and that there are no gaps or climbing issues between the rail base and the sleeper.
- Tighten fasteners: Make sure the front of the rail clip is making three-point contact with the rail gauge block.

Replacing a damaged clip
- Remove existing fasteners: Use a wrench to remove the nuts and then disassemble the other components like the tie plate and rail pad, making sure to store them in a safe place.
- Install new components: Place the new rail clips, ensuring proper alignment with the other components.
- Use appropriate tools: For installation, machinery or a large sledgehammer is often required, but a track layer can use hand tools for some tasks.
- Check and tighten: Once the new clips and other components are in place, inspect the installation for any defects. Before resuming service, it is important to conduct a final check and re-tighten the bolts as needed.
