What is the function of rail clip?

A rail clip is a key component of the rail fastening system, and its primary function is to secure the rail to the sleeper or baseplate while providing controlled elastic restraint. It ensures that the rail remains in the correct position under repeated train or crane loads, thermal movement, and vibration, while still allowing limited flexibility to protect the track structure from damage.

What is the function of rail clip?

  • The first and most critical function of a rail clip is to apply and maintain clamping force on the rail foot. This downward force holds the rail firmly against the rail pad and baseplate, preventing vertical lift caused by wheel impacts and dynamic loading. Stable clamping force is essential to avoid rail seat wear, loosening of fasteners, and long-term loss of track geometry.

  • Second, the rail clip provides lateral and longitudinal restraint. Laterally, it resists side forces generated in curves, during braking, and from crane trolley movement in industrial tracks, helping to keep the rail centered on the sleeper. Longitudinally, together with the baseplate and pad, it resists rail creep and thermal expansion forces, reducing the risk of joint movement and track buckling, especially in continuous welded rail (CWR) systems.

  • Third, rail clips contribute to the elastic behavior of the track system. Unlike rigid bolts or spikes, elastic clips are designed to flex slightly under load and then recover, which helps to absorb vibration and impact energy. This elasticity reduces stress concentrations in the rail, sleeper, and fastening components, extending the service life of all parts and improving ride quality and noise performance.

  • Fourth, rail clips help maintain accurate track geometry and gauge over long periods. By keeping consistent pressure on the rail foot, clips prevent gradual loosening that could lead to gauge widening, alignment deviation, and increased maintenance frequency.

Rail Clip Types

Rail clips are essential, high-strength spring steel fasteners that secure rails to sleepers, absorb vibration, and maintain gauge integrity. Major types include E-type (E1609-E2055), SKL tension clips (SKL1-SKL75), Nabla, Fast-clip, and KPO clamps. These, along with Deenik and crane clips, ensure safety, reduce maintenance, and allow for thermal expansion in modern track.

Here are the main types of rail clips and fasteners:

  • E-Type Rail Clips (E-Clip): Widely used for fastening, E-clips provide durable, high-strength alignment. Common variations include E1609, E1809, E1817, E2007, E2009, and E2055.

  • SKL Rail Clips (SKL Tension Clamps): Often used in German-designed systems, these clips (SKL1, SKL3, SKL12, SKL14, SKL75) are designed to provide high tension and maintain track stability.

  • Fast Clip Fasteners: Designed for high-speed rails and quick installation, these clips are installed perpendicularly to the rail.

  • KPO Rail Clamps: A robust, bolt-based, adjustable fastening system (e.g., KPO3, KPO6) often used for heavy-duty applications or cranes.

  • Deenik Rail Clips: A specific type of elastic fastening system, often used in particular regional, such as Dutch, railway systems.

  • PR Series Clips: Known as part of the Pandrol system, widely utilized in countries like India, Canada, and America.
