What are types of rail clips?

Rail clips can be classified in several ways based on structural form, installation method, and load capacity, but in practical rail engineering they are most commonly grouped by clip design and application scenario. Each type is developed to provide the required clamping force, elasticity, and durability under different traffic and environmental conditions.

One major category is the E-type elastic rail clip, such as E-clip and E-type variants used with concrete sleepers and baseplates. These clips are made of high-strength spring steel and provide stable vertical and lateral restraint with good elastic recovery. They are widely used on mainline railways, metros, and heavy-haul lines because they maintain clamping force over long service periods and are compatible with continuous welded rail systems.

Another common category is the SKL series elastic clip (for example, SKL1, SKL3, SKL12, SKL14, SKL15). These clips are typically used with embedded shoulders or cast-in fastenings on concrete sleepers. SKL clips provide higher toe load and better vibration damping, making them suitable for high-speed rail, urban transit, and heavy axle-load routes where strict control of track geometry is required.

A further type is the Pandrol-type clip system, which is widely used internationally and includes different models designed for specific rail sections and sleeper structures.
