What is the difference between crane rail and train rail

A steel rail is a hot-rolled steel bar with a specific I-shaped profile used as the main component of railway tracks and overhead cranes to guide steel wheels, bear pressure, and provide a smooth, stable rolling surface for vehicles.

In Terms of Core Purpose and Rail Model

Crane Rails: Specifically designed for lifting equipment such as overhead cranes, gantry cranes, and tower cranes, with core requirements of "heavy load bearing + precise guidance". The commonly used rails are QU-type special rails for cranes (e.g., QU70, QU80, QU100, QU120).

Train Rails: Serve ordinary-speed/high-speed trains and freight trains, requiring a balance of "high-speed operation + long-distance smoothness". The commonly used rails include heavy railway rails (e.g., 50kg/m, 60kg/m, 75kg/m) and light rails (e.g., 30kg/m). For example, a 300t gantry crane in a port requires QU120 rails, while passenger dedicated lines mostly use 60kg/m or 75kg/m heavy railway rails.

In Terms of Rail Cross-Section Design and Load-Bearing Characteristics

Crane Rails: Adopt a special "wider top and narrower bottom" cross-section. They have a wider rail head (e.g., the rail head width of QU120 is 120mm, while that of a 60kg/m train heavy rail is only 73mm) and a thicker rail web (the rail web thickness of QU120 is 44mm, while that of a 60kg/m heavy rail is 16.5mm), which can disperse the ultra-large wheel load of lifting equipment.

QU80 130 130 80 32 63.69

Train Rails: Feature a "symmetrical I-shaped" cross-section, focusing on reducing train operation resistance. The arc-shaped design of the rail head is adapted to the wheel tread, and seamless welding (using rail flash welding machines) is applied to reduce joint impact and improve high-speed smoothness.
