Railroad Railway Steel Rails

Railroad Railway Steel Rails

Railway Clip is used to fasten the rails to the underlying base plate together with the concrete sleeper. A variety of different types of heavy-duty clips are used to fasten the rails to the underlying baseplate or Sleeper, one common being the E Clip, which is shaped like a stubby paperclip. Another one is the SKL Tension Clamp, which is also the most widely used type all over the world. Others like KPO Clamp and Nabla Clip, also used in different situations.

Rail Nabla Clip Fastening System

Mechanical Rail Nabla Clips

Railway Nabla clips, named for their distinctive triangular or wedge-like (∇-shaped) profile, are specialized fastening components used in direct fixation rail systems. They are engineered to elastically clamp the rail foot to the concrete or steel baseplate, providing consistent restraint, electrical insulation, and vibration damping. Their design allows for controlled vertical, lateral, and longitudinal forces, making them critical for modern track stability.

Technical Specifications:

Model / Type Typical Clamping Force (kN) Primary Application Scene Standard Material / Treatment Key Characteristic / Insulator Type
Vossloh W 14 14 - 15 High-speed rail, Metro systems Spring steel, Zn flake coating Paired with GRP (glass-reinforced polyamide) insulator; adjustable toe load.
Pandrol Fastclip 12 - 15 (configurable) Mainline & Heavy haul SAE 5160 steel, epoxy coating Self-locking, two-part system with a cast iron shoulder and separate clip.
Nabla SFC 18 - 20 Heavy-haul freight, High-tonnage lines Alloy spring steel, Dacromet High-retention force; often used with a polyurethane insulator for enhanced damping.
Stedef VIPA 13 - 14 Light rail, Tram systems Stainless steel (AISI 301) Corrosion-resistant; integrated insulating foot for simplified assembly.
Generic Low-Profile 9 - 11 Depot tracks, Industrial sidings Galvanized carbon steel Compact design for limited clearance areas; basic polyamide insulator.

Application Scenarios

High-Speed Rail Corridors: Deployed on slab tracks and bridge decks to maintain precise rail alignment and gauge under dynamic loads at very high speeds.

Heavy-Haul Freight Lines: Selected for their high clamping force and resistance to rail creep in sections carrying high axle loads and frequent traffic.

Special Trackwork: Utilized in complex track layouts like turnouts (switches) and crossings, where consistent and reliable restraint is needed on varied baseplates.

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Minimal Routine Maintenance: Designed as a "fit-and-forget" component, requiring no periodic re-tightening under normal conditions, unlike some bolted fastenings.
  • Quick Unit Replacement: Damaged clips can be individually replaced without disturbing adjacent clips or the rail alignment, using specialized installation/removal tools.
  • Long Service Life: Typically offers a service life of 25-30 years, contingent on correct installation, load spectrum, and environmental factors (e.g., corrosion, UV exposure for above-ground use).
