Dog Spike Heavy Duty Rail

Dog Spike Heavy Duty Rail

Dog spikes is functionally equivalent to a cut spike and is also square in horizontal section and of similar dimensions, but has a pointed penetrating end, and the rail head has two lugs on either side, giving the impression of a dog's head and aiding spike removal.

Rail Dog Spike Fastening System

Railroad Railway Steel Rails Dog Spike

The Railway Dog Spike is a forged steel fastening component with an offset L-shaped head and square shank, engineered to secure rails and tie plates to wooden sleepers through direct mechanical interlock . Manufactured from carbon steel grades including Q235, 45#, and 55#, with property classes ranging from 4.6 to 8.8, these spikes achieve tensile strength of 400–800 MPa depending on specification .

Installation & Maintenance Perspective:

  • Available materials: Q235, 45#, 55# carbon steel with property classes 4.6, 5.6, 8.8
  • AREMA high-tensile grade: 70,000 psi (483 MPa) tensile, 46,000 psi (317 MPa) yield, 25% elongation
  • Optimized carbon content: 0.17–0.25% with manganese 0.90–1.35% for strength-ductility balance
  • Cold bend test: 90° without cracking verifies ductility for impact driving
  • Hardness range: 85–95 HRB for low-carbon grades ensuring fracture resistance

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Square shank (14–16mm) provides 50% higher holding power than equivalent round shanks
  • Offset L-shaped head with sloped underside matches rail base angle for uniform clamping
  • Wedge-shaped point driven across wood grain doubles pull-out resistance versus with-grain driving
  • Two-lug "dog-eared" head design (European style) or spoon-shaped head (American style)
  • Pull-out resistance documented: 857 lbs in dry cedar, 4,281 lbs in seasoned oak (9/16" spike)
