Spiral spikes, also known as rail screws, are a type of railway spike, a metal screw used to fix rail fasteners. Spiral spikes are usually called spiral spikes because their spike rods have threads on their surface.
Their tensile strength is 0.5~1.0 times higher than that of ordinary spikes, but their thrust strength is 50% lower. Due to the inconvenience of disassembly and assembly, it is difficult to adjust the track gauge, so they are generally used in railway turnouts.
As for the cost, the screw spike require higher cost than the dog spike but has the advantage of greater fixing power; approximately twice that of a rail spike, and can be used in combination with spring washers.
