Railway Accessories Rail Dog Spike

Railway Accessories Rail Dog Spike

Dog spikes is functionally equivalent to a cut spike and is also square in horizontal section and of similar dimensions, but has a pointed penetrating end, and the rail head has two lugs on either side, giving the impression of a dog's head and aiding spike removal.

Rail Dog Spike Fastening System

Dog Spikes Of Railway Steel Rail

The Railway Dog Spike, also known as a "cut" or "hook-headed" spike, is one of the most traditional and mechanically simple rail fastening components. It is a large, square-shanked iron or steel spike with a pronounced offset head resembling a "dog's head" or hook. Its primary function is to secure flat-bottomed rails directly to wooden sleepers (ties). The spike is driven through pre-drilled holes in the steel baseplate (tie plate) and into the timber sleeper.

Technical Specifications:

Perspective Defining Characteristic Core Process/Material Primary Advantage Major Limitation
Utility Mechanical Wedging Grip Timber Sleeper Interlock Extreme simplicity and low initial cost Provides no elastic force; prone to loosening
Production Hot-Forged Carbon Steel High-Volume Forging Very low unit cost, robust construction No performance consistency testing like clips
Maintenance Auditory Hammer Test Cyclical Re-driving Simple, skill-based field maintenance Labor-intensive, high ongoing upkeep
Elastic Rail Clamp

Functional & Engineering Perspective

Direct Mechanical Grip: Provides a purely frictional and mechanical hold by wedging its square shank into the wood fibers of the sleeper, with the hooked head restraining the rail base laterally.

Timber Sleeper Specialization: Exclusively designed for use with timber sleepers and steel tie plates; ineffective on concrete or steel sleepers.

Lateral Restraint Focus: The primary function is to prevent lateral movement (gauge widening) and rail roll; it provides minimal longitudinal or vertical restraint compared to elastic clips.

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Material & Forging: Historically forged from wrought iron, now predominantly hot-forged or hot-rolled from low to medium-carbon steel (e.g., AISI 1035, 1045).
  • Hot Forming Process: The iconic shape is created through a series of hot-forging operations: heading to form the dog head, rolling or forging to create the square shank, and pointing the tip.
  • Minimal Heat Treatment: Typically receives only stress-relieving or normalizing after forging to reduce brittleness; does not require the complex heat treatment of spring steel clips.
