Screw Spikes Of Railway Steel Rail

Screw Spikes Of Railway Steel Rail

The screw spike is also known as rail screw. As one kind of Rail spike, it is a metal screw for fixing rail fasteners. Screw spike is usually made of NO.3 steel. Because its nail rod surface has thread, so it is called screw spike. The pull-out resistance is 0.5 ~ 1.0 times larger than that of common rail spike, but the thrust resistance is 50% less. Due to disassembly and assembly inconvenience, it is difficult to adjust the rail gauge, which is generally used on the railway turnout. For meeting various needs of clients, we can offer coach screws, stud screw, railway sleeper screws and other coustom screw spike in railway.

Rail Screw clip Fastening System

Screw Spike Rail Fastening Systems

The Railway Screw Spike is a versatile mechanical fastener that combines the principles of a bolt and a spike. It consists of a threaded upper section, a square or ribbed shank, and a pointed end. It is installed by screwing it through a hole in a baseplate or soleplate and into a pre-drilled hole in a concrete, steel, or (historically) timber sleeper. Unlike driven spikes, it secures the rail assembly primarily through the clamping force generated by its torque and the mechanical interlock of its threads.

Functional & Engineering Perspective

Torque-Dependent Clamping: Its securing force is directly proportional to the installation torque applied, creating a pre-defined tension that clamps the rail baseplate firmly to the sleeper.

Thread-Based Retention: The threads cut into or engage with a plastic insert/soft material in the sleeper hole, providing superior pull-out resistance compared to smooth shank spikes.

Adjustability & Re-tightening: A key advantage is its adjustability. Loosened spikes can often be re-tightened to the specified torque without immediate replacement, restoring the clamping force.

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Moderate Unit & Installation Cost: The spike itself is more expensive than a dog spike, and installation requires drilling and torquing equipment, increasing initial costs.
  • Extended Maintenance Cycles: Offers longer service intervals than dog spikes due to better retention and re-tightenability, reducing long-term labor costs for track upkeep.
  • Sleeper Versatility: Its design allows it to be used effectively with modern concrete sleepers (using plastic dowels), steel sleepers, and composite materials, providing a transitional technology.
