Screw Spikes Railroad Fastening System

Screw Spikes Railroad Fastening System

The screw spike is also known as rail screw. As one kind of Rail spike, it is a metal screw for fixing rail fasteners. Screw spike is usually made of NO.3 steel. Because its nail rod surface has thread, so it is called screw spike. The pull-out resistance is 0.5 ~ 1.0 times larger than that of common rail spike, but the thrust resistance is 50% less. Due to disassembly and assembly inconvenience, it is difficult to adjust the rail gauge, which is generally used on the railway turnout. For meeting various needs of clients, we can offer coach screws, stud screw, railway sleeper screws and other coustom screw spike in railway.

Rail Screw Spike Fastening System

Screw Spikes System

The Railway Screw Spike is a high-tensile threaded fastener that functions as the railway's "anchor to the earth," translating rotational force into a permanent vertical grip that locks the rail base to the sleeper with calculated elasticity. Unlike static fasteners, its engineered helix acts as a shock absorber, allowing micro-movements during train passage while automatically returning to its original seated position, thereby maintaining gauge integrity and preventing the "rail creep" that leads to track buckling or pull-aparts under extreme thermal stress.

Technical Specifications:

Feature Railway Screw Spike Traditional Lag Screw
Thread Geometry Progressive-pitch for load distribution Uniform pitch for general fastening
Installation Feedback Shear-groove torque indication Requires external torque wrench
Dynamic Behavior Elastic shank rebounds under load Rigid; prone to loosening
Corrosion Strategy Calculated sacrificial layer with visual indicators Standard coating; failure is sudden
Material Efficiency Single component replaces multiple parts Often requires separate washers/anchors
Embedment Monitoring Depth rings visible as spike rises No wear indication
Elastic Rail Clamp

Installation & Maintenance Perspective:

Graduated Thread Pitch: The thread spacing tightens near the head, creating a progressive gripping action that distributes load evenly along the spike's length rather than concentrating it at the entry point.

Elastic Recovery Zone: The unthreaded shank section beneath the head acts as a spring column, compressing slightly under load and rebounding to maintain constant pressure on the rail foot.

Vibration Damping: The continuous metal-to-wood interface along the entire thread length absorbs high-frequency vibrations that would otherwise resonate through the track structure and loosen standard fasteners.

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Pre-Drilling Elimination: The self-tapping tip geometry includes chip-clearing flutes that eject wood fibers during insertion, allowing direct installation into hardwood sleepers without separate drilling operations.
  • Visual Torque Indication: The head features calibrated shear grooves that twist off at optimal installation torque, providing immediate visual confirmation of proper seating without requiring specialized tools.
  • Dual-Drive Compatibility: The square-drive socket accepts both manual ratcheting wrenches for spot repairs and high-speed impact drivers for new construction, eliminating tool changeovers.
