A directional (right or left-hand) compromise rail joint bar is a type of railway connector used to address differences in the width of the rail head between two sections. It allows for rail offsetting to align the gauge side of the rail. ensuring a smooth and stable connection at the joint.
To determine whether a special joint bar is left or right-handed, follow these steps:
● Stand between the rails at the taller rail section.
● Face the lower rail section.
● The compromise rail joint to your right is considered "right-handed."
● The compromise rail joint bar to your left is considered "left-handed."
Non-directional (gauge or field side) joint bar
A non-directional (gauge or field side) joint bar is a type of railway connector used when there are variations in the height of rail heads between two sections, or when the difference in width of rail heads at the gauge point is not more than 1/8 inch. The gauge point is the spot on the gauge side of the rail exactly 5/8 inch below the top of the rail.
