Rail Fastening System Fish Plates

Rail Fastening System Fish Plates

Railway fish plate, also called rail joint or splice bar, is a metal bar connected to the ends of two railroad rails to join them together. By experience, high quality railway fish plates can effectively reduce the influence of wheels to the jointing sections of the steel rail and increase the steadiness and continuity of the train when passing through the jointing sections. As an important part of rail components, railway fish plates are widely used both in light rail and heavy rail to guarantee the safety of railroad transportation.

Rail Fishplate Fastening System

Rail Fastening System Fish Plate

A Railway Fishplate (or splice bar/rail joint bar) is a metal connector plate used to join two abutting rail ends together at a rail joint. It is bolted to the web of both rails, spanning the joint gap to maintain alignment, transmit bending and shear forces, and provide electrical continuity. While largely superseded by Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) in mainlines, fishplates remain critical for insulated joints, expansion joints, buffer stops, and in rail transit systems.

Functional & Engineering Perspective

Force Transmission Member: Primarily functions as a beam in bending, transferring vertical and lateral loads across the rail joint while minimizing differential deflection between rail ends.

Shear Key Design: The interior face features machined protrusions ("teeth" or grooves) that interlock with corresponding grooves in the rail web, providing shear resistance and preventing longitudinal slippage.

Bolt Clamping Mechanics: High-strength friction-grip bolts apply compression between the fishplate and rail web, creating frictional force that carries significant load alongside the shear keys.

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Alignment Preservation: The primary operational role is to hold the two rail ends in precise vertical and horizontal alignment, preventing "dipped" or misaligned joints that cause impactful wheel-rail interaction.
  • Electrical Continuity/Insulation: In standard joints, fishplates provide electrical conductivity for track circuits. In Insulated Joints, composite or specially designed fishplates with non-conductive materials block current flow for signal block demarcation.
  • Controlled Expansion Provision: At expansion joints (e.g., on bridges), specially designed fishplates allow for predetermined longitudinal movement of the rails while maintaining alignment and load transfer.
