Can concrete sleepers use rail screw spikes?
Yes, concrete sleepers can use rail screw spikes, which are typically screwed into pre-inserted plastic dowels or sleeves within the concrete. This combination is a common and reliable method for fastening rails to concrete sleepers, providing more holding power than traditional "dog spikes".
How it works?
- Plastic dowels/sleeves: Plastic dowels or sleeves are cast into the concrete sleepers during manufacturing.
- Screw spike: The railway screw spike, a large metal screw with threads on its shank, is then screwed into these plastic components.
- Securing the rail: The screw spike tightens against a rail base plate or tie plate, firmly securing the rail to the sleeper.

Advantages of using screw spikes
- Higher fastening power: Screw spikes offer more than twice the holding power of a traditional "dog spike".
- Ease of installation and maintenance: The screw design makes them easier to install and remove, which can improve construction efficiency and simplify daily inspection and maintenance.
- Variety: Screw spikes are available in many different variations, including different thread profiles, lengths, diameters, and drive heads, to meet specific railway standards and requirements.
types of rail screw sp;ik
At before, the screw spikes are usually used to fasten the ribbed base plates and sole plates to wood sleepers. With the construction and development of the concrete sleepers, the screw spikes play an important role in railway fastening systems with the help of a plastic dowel. Through the different specific geographic requirements such as lengths, diameters, drive heads and thread profiles, the railway screw spikes can be classified into four types: Ss series sleeper screw, square head screw spike, hexagon screw spike and double-head screw spike.
