Fishplates (rail joint splints) are commonly known as rail splints, also called fishplates, which play a connecting role at the rail joints. They are divided into light rails, heavy rails and lifting rails. Fishplates are a type of fastener used to connect rails to rails.
Season is also an important factor in the failure of fishplates. From the situation of field use, the fishplate damage in winter is significantly more than in other seasons. Through the determination of the cold brittle temperature of fishplates, it can be seen that the impact value of the B7 material fishplate widely used in China is already in the lower platform of the determination within the range of -60℃ to room temperature. Therefore, it can be considered that the cold brittle temperature of the material is not the main reason for the large-scale fracture of fishplates in winter.
Further analysis shows that the fracture of fishplates in winter may be related to the change of rail joints in winter. The increase of rail joints in winter will increase the tensile stress of fishplates, especially in the middle of the third and fourth bolt holes. This additional stress will cause an increase in the number of fishplate failures. However, due to the lack of systematic data, the magnitude of this additional stress, the influencing factors and the degree of threat to the life of the fishplate cannot be further concluded.
In addition, it is worth mentioning that some fishplates with special purposes or used in special parts, such as special-shaped fishplates, fishplates at fork toes or fishplates used in tunnels, have more complex stress states, are more difficult to maintain, and are often affected by some corrosive air. Therefore, their failure rate is often higher than that of ordinary fishplates, and the harm they cause to the line is also greater, so they should be given sufficient attention.
