Fishplates (rail joint plates) are commonly known as rail joints, also called fishplates, which play a connecting role at the rail joints. They are divided into light rails, heavy rails and lifting rails. Fishplates are a type of fastener used to connect rails to rails.
The formation of fishplate cracks is closely related to the interaction between the fishplate and the rail surface. The bolted fishplate and rail joint are not a rigid whole under actual working conditions. The impact of the wheels, the presence of rail gaps, and especially the decrease in tightening force caused by the wear between the rail and the fishplate will cause or aggravate the mutual rolling between the fishplate and the rail, resulting in surface deformation. The accumulation of this deformation provides a great opportunity for the initiation of surface cracks on the fishplate.
Therefore, it can be concluded that the interaction between the fishplate and the rail, the actual load on the fishplate and the material of the fishplate determine the location, time, mode and rate of damage to the fishplate, among which the interaction mainly affects the location and time of the crack origin, while the load condition and material condition determine the mode and rate of crack expansion.
When the crack starts from the upper end of the fishplate, the tensile stress is small, so the crack initiation and expansion are more affected by the material; when the fishplate starts from the lower end, the tensile stress is large, and the crack initiation and expansion are more affected by the load.
