How do rail clips work?

Rail elastic clip is used to fasten the rails to the underlying base plate together with the concrete sleeper. Usually rail clips are made of forged spring steel which is produced by hot forging process. Because of the uniform microstructure of forged clips, it is considered to be better than other metal forming process.

How do rail clips work?

 

Rail clips work by using elastic, springy steel to clamp the rail firmly to the sleeper (tie) through bending and distortion, creating constant pressure that prevents vertical/horizontal movement, maintains correct gauge, absorbs shock from trains, and allows for thermal expansion, ensuring track stability and safety. They function as a core part of a larger system, working with tie plates, pads, and insulators to distribute loads and provide a secure, adaptable connection.


Key Functions & Mechanism

 

 

  • Clamping Force: The clip's inherent elasticity allows it to deform when installed, creating a strong, continuous downward force (toe load) that holds the rail against the tie plate.

 

  • Movement Prevention: This clamping stops the rail from shifting side-to-side (horizontal) or lifting (vertical) due to train loads and vibrations.

  • Shock Absorption: The elastic design absorbs impact energy from passing trains, reducing stress and noise, making them ideal for high-speed lines.

 

  • Thermal Expansion: The slight give in the clips accommodates the rail's expansion and contraction with temperature changes, preventing buckling.

 

  • Gauge Maintenance: By holding the rail securely to the tie plate, they maintain the precise distance (gauge) between the rails.
