Installing a rail fastening system is a critical step to ensure the stability, safety, and durability of railway tracks and must be carried out strictly according to relevant standards and specifications.
A typical rail fastening system consists of rail clips (such as E-clip, SKL, KPO, Nabla), rail pads, rail insulators, tie plates, bolts, nuts, screws, and plastic sleeves etc.with each component serving a specific function and requiring precise handling during installation. Proper installation not only maintains track gauge accuracy but also effectively absorbs vibrations and impacts generated during train operations, extending the service life of both rails and sleepers.
The installation process begins with positioning and cleaning the sleepers, ensuring their surfaces are flat and free of debris.
Next, depending on the chosen fastening system, rail pads and rail insulators are placed first, followed by positioning the rail on the sleeper and securing it with rail clips. For E-clip or SKL clips, specialized clip installation tools are used to elastically press the clips into the rail shoulder groove, ensuring the clamping force meets the standard requirements. For KPO clips or bolted fastening systems, the tie plates are first fixed using bolts, nuts, and spring washers, after which the clips and screws are installed, ensuring a tight connection between the rail and sleeper.
During installation, bolt and screw torque must be strictly controlled to guarantee uniform clamping force, avoiding local loosening or over-tightening that could deform the track.
Finally, after installation, track gauge verification and clamping force inspection should be performed. If necessary, adjustments can be made using laser or precision measuring tools to ensure the track is level and safe for train operations.
