The function of an elastic rail clip is to fasten the rail to the sleeper or supporting structure with stable clamping force while allowing controlled elasticity, so that the track can safely withstand dynamic loads, vibration, and thermal movement without losing alignment or structural integrity. It is a fundamental component of modern railway and industrial rail fastening systems.
- Its primary function is to provide continuous vertical clamping force (toe load) on the rail foot. This keeps the rail firmly pressed against the rail pad and baseplate, preventing vertical lift, impact-induced movement, and fretting wear at the rail seat. Consistent clamping is critical to maintaining long-term fastening reliability.

- Another key function is to supply lateral restraint, resisting side forces from curving, braking, acceleration, and, in crane rail systems, trolley travel and skew forces. This helps maintain correct gauge and alignment, directly affecting operational safety and wheel–rail wear behavior.
- A further important function is vibration and impact attenuation.
