A rail clip is an elastic locking device that anchors the rail foot by applying downward and inward force, working together with rail pads and insulators to stabilize the rail against vibration, temperature variation, and traffic-induced movement. Its performance directly affects fastening durability.

GNEE RAIL provides elastic clips for slab track and ballast track, including SKL series, Nabla clips, Fast Clips, E-clips, and heavy-duty crane rail clips, compatible with UIC, DIN, GB, AS, and AREMA track standards, along with clip testing, selection advice, and system supply services.
How do rail clips work?
Rail clips work by using spring force generated from pre-loaded elastic steel to clamp the rail foot against the supporting structure, creating a fastening system that is both secure and flexible. Instead of rigidly locking the rail in place, a rail clip applies controlled pressure that adapts to load, vibration, and temperature changes while maintaining track stability.
- From a mechanical standpoint, the clip is installed in a deflected (bent) state. During installation, the clip is driven or rotated into the shoulder or anchor, which stores elastic energy in the steel. This stored energy produces a constant toe load pressing downward on the rail foot. Even if minor settlement, pad compression, or surface wear occurs, the clip continues to apply force, which is why elastic clips maintain clamping effectiveness over long service periods.

- Under passing wheel loads, the rail experiences vertical deflection and micro-movement. The rail pad compresses slightly, and the clip flexes within its elastic range, allowing limited movement while immediately restoring the rail to its seated position once the load passes. This mechanism reduces peak stresses at the rail seat and prevents loosening that would occur with rigid fasteners.
- Laterally, rail clips work together with shoulders, baseplates, and pad geometry to resist side forces. When the rail tends to move sideways due to curving forces, braking, or crane trolley skew, the clip's contact geometry and spring force generate friction and mechanical restraint that oppose this movement, helping maintain gauge and alignment.

- Longitudinally, rail clips contribute to rail creep resistance. While they do not fully lock the rail, the combination of clip toe load, pad friction, and baseplate design creates sufficient resistance to control thermal expansion and braking forces, which is especially important in continuous welded rail systems and in long crane runways.
What is the material of the elastic rail clip?
Elastic rail clips are primarily manufactured from high-grade, hot-forged spring steel, chosen for its exceptional strength, elasticity, and fatigue resistance. Common material grades include 60Si2MnA, 55Si2Mn, 60Si2CrA, and 38Si7. These materials are chosen to withstand heavy, repetitive loads, vibrations, and harsh environmental conditions on railway tracks.
Key Characteristics & Materials:
- Material Types: 60Si2Mn, 60Si2CrA, 38Si7, 55SiCr7.
- Manufacturing Method: Hot forging/hot-pressed.
- Hardness: Typically ranges from HRC 42-48.
- Performance: Designed for high tensile strength and corrosion resistance.
- Common Applications: Widely used in fastening systems (e.g., E-clips, Pandrol clips, and SKL clips).
