Products Description

As global production models continue to evolve, OEM and ODM have become common cooperation models in the manufacturing industry. Both models involve a partnership between an original equipment manufacturer and a contract manufacturer, but they differ significantly in many ways. This article will detail the differences between OEM and ODM.

1. Definition of OEM and ODM

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) refers to a company that designs and produces a product, and then authorizes another company to use its brand trademark to sell the product under its own brand name. In this process, the OEM is responsible for design and production, while the OEM is responsible for production in accordance with the requirements of the OEM.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) refers to a company that accepts the commission of the OEM, designs and produces a product in accordance with the requirements of the OEM, and then the OEM sells the product under its own brand name. In this process, the OEM and the OEM share the responsibility for design and production.

2. The difference between OEM and ODM

Allocation of design and production responsibilities

Under the OEM model, the original equipment manufacturer is responsible for the design and production of the product, and the OEM is only responsible for production in accordance with the requirements of the original equipment manufacturer. In the ODM model, the original equipment manufacturer and the OEM jointly bear the responsibility for design and production. Therefore, the ODM model requires higher technical and design capabilities of the OEM.

Degree of participation in product development

Under the OEM model, the OEM does not need to participate in the product development process, but only needs to produce according to the requirements of the original equipment manufacturer. In the ODM model, the OEM needs to participate in the product development process and negotiate with the original equipment manufacturer to design the product plan. Therefore, the ODM model requires higher product development capabilities of the OEM.

Degree of customization

Under the OEM model, the original equipment manufacturer will provide its own brand trademark and product design plan to the OEM manufacturer, and the OEM manufacturer will produce according to these requirements. Therefore, the degree of customization in the OEM model is relatively low. In the ODM model, the OEM manufacturer needs to negotiate with the original equipment manufacturer to design the product plan, and can carry out certain customized production according to the needs of the original equipment manufacturer, so the degree of customization in the ODM model is relatively high.

Brand ownership

Under the OEM model, the OEM manufacturer can only use the brand trademark of the original equipment manufacturer for OEM sales, and the brand ownership belongs to the original equipment manufacturer. In the ODM model, although the product design and production are completed by the OEM manufacturer, the brand ownership still belongs to the original equipment manufacturer, and the OEM manufacturer cannot use its own brand for sales.

Summary

To sum up, although OEM and ODM are both common cooperation models in the manufacturing industry, there are obvious differences in the allocation of design and production responsibilities, the degree of participation in product development, the degree of customization, brand ownership, and the closeness of cooperation. The choice of cooperation model needs to be comprehensively considered according to the actual situation. For enterprises that need to improve their product development and technical capabilities, they can choose the ODM model, while for enterprises that only need to carry out simple production, they can choose the OEM model.
