European railway rail industry ushers in standardization reform to promote standardized development of the industry
Paris, April 22, 2025-The European railway rail industry has recently ushered in major reforms. The European Commission announced that it will unify the production standards of railway rails and promote the standardization of the industry. This reform aims to improve the safety and sustainability of railway construction and operation and promote the integration of railway systems in the European region.
In the past few decades, the production standards of railway rails in European countries have varied greatly. Although these rails meet the basic requirements for use, the differences in standards have led to incompatibility in cross-border railway transportation, and even affected transportation efficiency and safety. To this end, the European Commission decided to launch a standardization reform of railway rails to unify the production, installation and maintenance standards of railway rails in Europe.
According to the new standards, all railway rails will have to meet unified technical requirements, especially in terms of strength, hardness and corrosion resistance of rails. The new rail standards also include specific requirements for the surface treatment of rails to ensure the durability of rails under different climatic conditions, especially in cold regions.
This reform is expected to have a profound impact on the European railway rail industry. First, unified standards will help improve the technical level of the entire industry, prompting rail manufacturers to improve manufacturing processes and ensure that the quality of rails for all railway projects reaches international advanced levels. Second, unified standards will also reduce the cost and time of rail procurement, improve transportation efficiency, and reduce failures and delays caused by incompatible railway equipment.
For rail suppliers, unified standards mean more intense market competition, and only those companies with high-quality production capabilities can stand out in the market. Therefore, the European Commission also plans to provide technical support and financial subsidies to rail manufacturers to help them improve their manufacturing capabilities and ensure the healthy development of the industry.
