During train operation, wheels act on the rails generating not only vertical and lateral forces but also longitudinal forces due to wheel rolling, longitudinal sliding, and train braking. These forces subject the rails to longitudinal dynamic loads. When the longitudinal forces exceed the fundamental resistance of the rail foundation (including fastener resistance, joint resistance, ballast resistance, etc.), longitudinal displacement of the rail or track frame occurs. This phenomenon is referred to as track creeping.
