Rubber rail pads, originally called sole plates or sole pads, are elastic polyurethane mats that are interposed between railway sleepers and steel rails. Their function of rubber rail pad is to reduce fatigue cracking of the concrete ties, which is believed to be driven by impact and vibration from the passing train.

Rail rubber pads are commonly used with concrete sleepers. Concrete sleepers offer advantages such as high strength, good durability, and strong compressive resistance. However, their high rigidity and lack of elasticity mean that impacts and vibrations generated by the rail under high-speed train operation or heavy axle loads are transmitted directly to the sleeper and ballast. Without cushioning, this can easily lead to sleeper cracking, rail fatigue, or gauge deviation.

After installation, the rubber pad is positioned between the base of the rail and the concrete sleeper. It utilizes highly elastic materials to absorb the impact forces and vibrations generated by train wheel loads and distributes the pressure evenly across the sleeper surface. This protects the sleeper, extends the service life of the rail, and simultaneously reduces the impact of noise and vibration on the ballast and the surrounding environment.
