Detailed explanation of the manufacturing process of steel rails

 

The manufacturing process of rails is a high-precision, high-standard industrial process, covering multiple links such as raw material smelting, continuous casting, hot rolling, straightening, cutting, and flaw detection. Its main goal is to ensure that each rail has a uniform organizational structure, excellent mechanical properties, and stable dimensional accuracy to adapt to the complex and changeable railway operation environment.

 

The first step is to select high-quality steelmaking raw materials, smelt standard molten steel through converter steelmaking or electric furnace steelmaking, and then form steel billets through continuous casting. These billets are heated to about 1200℃ and repeatedly rolled into standard-sized rails through rolling mills. During the rolling process, the temperature and deformation must be strictly controlled to ensure uniform metal flow.

 

Next, the rails will be sent to the straightening equipment, and the rails will be straightened by multi-roller straightening to ensure the straightness of the rails, and then cut into the required length (such as 12m or 25m), and enter the ultrasonic flaw detection link after cooling. Flaw detection can effectively detect whether there are cracks, inclusions and other defects inside the rail head, rail waist and rail bottom, which is a key step to ensure the safe operation of rails.

 

Some high-grade rails also need to be induction hardened to form a high-hardness wear-resistant layer on the surface of the rail head to extend its service life. Finally, the rails will be stamped with steel marks, treated with anti-corrosion coatings, and then packaged and shipped. The entire manufacturing process has extremely high requirements for process parameters and quality management, which is the fundamental guarantee for ensuring the safety and service life of the rails.
