What are the characteristics of Rail Clips?

The rail elastic clips (also called rail clip, elastic rail clip )are used with railway sleeper to fasten rails on both sides. The rail clips are usually made of forged spring steel, which are manufactured by hot forging process. The forged rail clips are considered to be better than other metal forming process due to most uniform microstructure.

Rail clips are characterized by their elasticity, high fatigue life, and durable materials like spring steel, which allow them to withstand the bending, torsion, and impact loads of passing trains. They provide a secure fastening for rails to sleepers and are designed to maintain track integrity, absorb shock, and accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. Their surface treatment and hardness are key properties that affect their performance and longevity.

Material and construction

• Material: Typically made from high-quality spring steel (e.g., 60Si2Cr, 55SiMn, 38Si7, 60Si2MnA) to ensure elasticity and strength.

• Hardness: Generally have a hardness of 41-46 HRC to provide resilience and durability.

• Fatigue life: Designed to have a long fatigue life, often in the range of three to five million cycles.

Functional characteristics

• Elasticity: Provide a reliable and elastic connection between the rail and the sleeper.

• Load-bearing: Can withstand significant forces, with elastic rail clips bearing about two tons of force.
