Rail elastic clip is used to fasten the rails to the underlying base plate together with the concrete sleeper. Usually rail clips are made of forged spring steel which is produced by hot forging process. Because of the uniform microstructure of forged clips, it is considered to be better than other metal forming process.

The tensile strength of rail clips varies significantly based on the type and material, but common values for elastic rail clips are ≥400 MPa to ≥500 MPa, while some specialized welded clips can withstand significantly higher horizontal forces, such as 165kN. For example, a common elastic rail clip made of 60Si2Cr or 60Si2Mn spring steel typically requires a minimum tensile strength of ≥400 MPa, while higher-grade versions need ≥500 MPa.

- Elastic rail clips: Often have a tensile strength of ≥400 MPa to ≥500 MPa, depending on the specific grade.
- Welded rail clips: Some specialized clips, like the Gantrail 1120/21, are designed to withstand high horizontal forces, with the Gantrail 1120/21 capable of handling 165kN (16.8 tonnes).
- Other factors: Tensile strength is just one measure; other properties like yield strength, hardness (e.g., 40-48 HRC for some elastic clips), and fatigue life are also critical for performance.
