It also helps in eliminating cuts and wear of wooden ties.

For standard track sections using railroad tie anchors, a 39-foot (approximately 11-meter) long rail generally requires 8 rail anchors. The number of track anchors may increase with steeper gradients.
On open-deck bridges: Railway anchors should be installed on tracks approaching open-deck bridges, with box anchors placed at intervals of every third tie for at least two rail lengths on both ends of the bridge.
At railway crossings: For crossings where rail anchors are used, box anchors should be installed at intervals of every third tie in all directions starting from the crossing, extending for at least two rail lengths.
At railway switches: Rail anchors are optional in switch areas. When used in switches, they help correct geometric alignment issues.
