Railroad Screw Spikes

Railroad Screw Spikes

The screw spike is also known as rail screw. As one kind of Rail spike, it is a metal screw for fixing rail fasteners. Screw spike is usually made of NO.3 steel. Because its nail rod surface has thread, so it is called screw spike. The pull-out resistance is 0.5 ~ 1.0 times larger than that of common rail spike, but the thrust resistance is 50% less. Due to disassembly and assembly inconvenience, it is difficult to adjust the rail gauge, which is generally used on the railway turnout. For meeting various needs of clients, we can offer coach screws, stud screw, railway sleeper screws and other coustom screw spike in railway.

Rail Screw Spike Fastening System

Rail Fastener Spring Screw Spike

A Railway Screw Spike is a tapered, helically-threaded steel dowel specifically engineered for securing rails and baseplates to wooden sleepers through rotational insertion rather than impact driving. Its distinguishing feature is the coarse, deep-cut thread form that progressively engages wood fibers along the entire shank length, creating a compression-fit anchor with withdrawal resistance significantly exceeding that of cut spikes. The head incorporates a forged square or hex drive section with an integral collar that bears directly on the rail foot or tie plate, providing both vertical clamping and lateral restraint through thread-to-wood interference.

Technical Specifications:

Feature Category Key Benefit Common Application
Buttress Thread Maximum pull-out resistance directionally optimized Steep gradients & braking zones
Hot-Dip Galvanizing 50+ micron sacrificial protection Coastal & humid environments
Lead-in Taper Cross-threading prevention during installation High-speed mechanized spiking
4-6 TPI Pitch Balanced grip vs. torque requirement Softwood sleeper main lines
Proof Load Testing 1.5x safety factor validation Safety-critical turnouts
Elastic Embedment Micro-movement absorption without loosening Bridge approaches & transitions
Elastic Rail Clamp

Installation & Maintenance Perspective:

  • Buttress-style thread profile maximizes load-bearing surface on the pull-out side.
  • Root diameter larger than shank prevents torsional shear failure during installation.
  • Thread depth calculated to engage springwood and summerwood layers differentially.
  • Lead-in taper at tip prevents cross-threading in pilot holes during initial engagement.
  • Thread pitch of 4-6 threads per inch optimizes grip without excessive installation torque.

Maintenance & Operational Perspective

  • Hot-dip galvanizing provides sacrificial zinc layer 50-85 microns thick.
  • Sherardized coatings offer uniform diffusion layers for threaded areas without buildup.
  • Bi-metal corrosion cells monitored between spike, plate, and sleeper materials.
  • Creosote-compatible coatings prevent chemical degradation in treated sleepers.
  • Periodic torque auditing reveals hidden corrosion before visible failure occurs.
