What are the common materials used for Rail Clips?

Rail clip is an important part of railway fastening system. The proper heat treatment process is necessary for producing high quality rail clips. A rail clip is an elastic part that connect with track bolt and rail tie plate to fasten steel rails, then a complete railway fastening system is made up, and these devices are all called rail fasteners. There are also other devices like rail clamp, rail spike and rubber rail pad, they can also make up other types of rail fastening systems for fastening steel rail.

Common materials for rail clips are spring steel and alloy steel, selected for their high strength, durability, and elasticity. These materials are often processed through hot forging to create a uniform microstructure, and specific grades like 60Si2MnA or 60Si2CrA are frequently used.

  • Spring and alloy steel

Spring steel: This is the most common material because of its elasticity and ability to withstand repeated stress. Common grades include 55 Si7, 60 Si7, 65 Si7, 55 Si Cr7, 60Si2MnA, 60Si2CrA, 55Si2Mn, and 38Si7.

Alloy steel: Similar to spring steel, alloy steel is chosen for its durability and wear resistance against the harsh conditions of railway use.

  • Processing and properties

Hot forging: Rail clips are typically made using a hot forging process, which results in a more uniform and stronger microstructure compared to other metal forming methods.

High-strength steel: Other types of high-strength steel, such as Q235, are also used in some components of the rail clip system.

Fatigue resistance: The chosen materials must be resistant to fatigue from the constant vibration and stress of trains running on the track.

Corrosion resistance: To ensure a long lifespan, the materials must also be resistant to corrosion, especially in varying weather conditions.
