Rail Fastening System is used to fasten the steel rails to the sleepers. The function of rail fastening system is to maintain the gauge and prevent the vertical and horizontal movement of rails relative to the position of the sleeper. A fastening system is usually consist of Rail clip, Screw Spike, Rail insulator, Tie Plate, Rail Pad, Rail insert, ect.

Rail Clip
Rail clip, or called elastic rail clip, is used to fasten steel rails to the underlying tie plate. Through bending and distortion, rail clip can put pressure on the rail, which prevents longitudinal movement of the rail, either from changes in temperature or through vibration.

Rail Spike
Railroad spike, also know as rail spike. Railroad spikes are designed to maintain gauge between the running rails and also they are mean to secure the steel rail to the railroad tie. Rail spikes have various shapes serving for different functions. The materials for railroad spikes production can be carbon or stainless steel based on the requirement, and the surface of the spikes can be plain, black, hot dipped galvanized, or sherardized, etc. Among the various railroad spikes, dog spikes and the screw spikes are the most common types.

Rail Pad
Rail pads are elastic polyurethane mats which are interposed between steel rails and railway sleepers to protect the sleeper top from wearing and impacting.
The starting stiffness of a rail pad is designed to not be high so that their relative deformation under the spring clip toe loads is greatly substantial. In this way, it can guarantees the rail pad maintaining in close contact with the rail despite of any vertical movements of the latter. In addition, the reason why rail pads made up of rubber or plastic is to dampen the shocks of vibration of a passing train.
