The dog spike is a connecting component of traditional railway tracks, with the core function of fixing components such as the rail and base plate onto wooden sleepers. It secures them by physically gripping the wood fibers of the sleeper through friction, preventing lateral displacement or loosening of the track during train operation, thereby ensuring basic track stability. It is primarily used in railway scenarios where wooden sleepers are still employed.

Its applicable scenarios are relatively specific, such as some old wooden sleeper lines and low-traffic branch lines (like small freight railways in forest areas or mining areas). In these scenarios, traffic volume is low, train axle loads are light, and wooden sleepers are still in use, where dog spikes can meet the basic fixation requirements. However, it has obvious limitations: it relies solely on wooden sleepers for fixation. Once the wooden sleeper wears out, the spike is prone to loosening, requiring frequent subsequent maintenance. Nowadays, it is rarely used in mainstream railways (such as high-speed rail and freight dedicated lines).

Although dog spikes have specific uses, current railway construction tends to prefer concrete sleepers paired with screw spikes - not only providing more secure fixation but also adapting to heavy-duty and high-frequency operation scenarios.

Spikes with various sizes are provided to meet the different requirements of penetrating length of spikes. The common track spikes are the 5/8"*6" and the 9/16"*5-1/2" for smaller rail sections, and they are usually secured in either 200 lb. kegs or 50 lb. kegs.
